The Australian music scene like many of the arts sectors in this country are underfunded and at times undervalued. After some investigation and reaching out to local music lovers below is a condensed list of some of the greats of Australian music, along with some unknown artists I think you should give a listen to, broken down by decade and/ or genre.

In no particular order, the first artist who you may have forgotten about is Paul Kelly, a troubadour through and through with witty lyricism and great use of more stripped- down acoustic guitar.  His notable hits that you definitely need to listen to are ‘To Her Door’, ‘Dumb Things’ and ‘How To Make Gravy’.

If stripped down guitar and storytelling aren’t your particular cup of tea, have a look at up-and-coming Sydney artist DON WEST, whose music goes down the more soul and funk route, with songs that will have you bobbing along on your road trips up and down the coast.

Dizzy Days are a girl group from Brisbane, creating fun pop/ disco dance tracks to add to any party playlist. With Tripple J Unearthed stating that if you like artists like Jamiroquai and Dua Lipa, you’ll love these girls.

Another important, proudly Indigenous Australian Artist you need to add back to your regular listening is Jessica Mauboy, whose killer vocals and R&B/ Pop tracks will have you singing along in the shower and dancing like nobody’s watching.

If you’re looking to get your alternative pop music fix, PRETTY BLEAK is the answer to your prayers. This Melbourne based group are great for those days when you’re feeling a bit nihilistic. If you like The 1975, you’ll love these guys!

The final new artist from Toowoomba that I’d like to shoutout is Jude York whose music is clearly inspired by European techno. His vocal tone is unique and adds so much richness to any song he sings. His funky tunes will make you feel like you’re clubbing in Europe on a Summers night.

Some honourable mentions, and a reminder that Australia has some fantastic musicians and makes some GREAT music are classic artists like, Cold Chisel, Hunters and Collectors, Midnight Oil, Crowded House, Marcia Hines, Tina Arena, Kylie Minogue and INXS.

Before you go to hit play your usual playlist, why not give one of these artists a listen? Use this as a reminder to listen to the Aussie artists of the past or discover someone new. They could very well become your new favourites!
